Making the Move

Making the Move

By Dominic Hefferan on Mar 26 2018

With all the stress and excitement of selling and buying a property, it's easy to forget about the next step: moving. It's often an emotional time, with final farewells to the old home and the hustle and bustle of getting set up in the new, and sometimes it feels like you're going in circles. But by following these simple suggestions, it doesn't have to be a gargantuan task.

Plan Ahead

It seems obvious, but you need to have a plan well in advance of moving day. Remember, everything will take longer than you think, so expect delays and don't try to do everything in one day, or even one weekend. Also, if you have small children or pets, try to organise for friends or family to take care of them for a little while, even if it's just a few hours, as you don't want your attention divided during the move.

Get Snacks

Most people don't consider food during a move, but you'll basically be on your feet all day, and when the fridge is unplugged and the pantry's been emptied, you'll find yourself getting hungry before you know it.

Having some simple muesli bars or chips on hand won't exactly be a banquet, but it will keep your head clear and your energy up when you need it.

Clear Out

You'd be amazed by how much junk can accumulate in even the neatest households. A move is a chance to get rid of unneeded items, like old linens, out-of-date papers and bills, and unused clothes that you might otherwise ignore. A good rule of thumb is to throw out anything you haven't used in six months, but of course it's up to you as to what stays and what goes.
